Coursera Professional Certificate - What You Should Know & Tips to Learn More Effectively

There's a funny truth: when I was in school I wanted to work, and once I started working I realized I wanted to study again - because now that I have a job, when I want to learn something new, I either don't know where to learn it, or I don't have the money for it.

There’s a funny truth: when I was in school I wanted to work, and once I started working I realized I wanted to study again - because now that I have a job, when I want to learn something new, I either don’t know where to learn it, or I don’t have the money for it. That’s why when I found Coursera’s courses, I was genuinely thrilled - they’re convenient, don’t cost an arm and a leg, and let me pick up new knowledge I’d never had before.

What is a Coursera Professional Certificate

Beyond the short, free courses, Coursera has partnered with major companies like Google, Meta, IBM, and various universities to produce Coursera Professional Certificates. These are:

  • Specialized, professional-level programs focused on a specific field
  • Typically 3-6 months to complete
  • Require a meaningful investment of time and effort

What do you get from a Professional Certificate

You’ll walk away with:

  • A solid, systematic foundation of knowledge in your chosen field
  • Practical exercises to reinforce what you’ve learned
  • A certificate at the end to add to your LinkedIn profile

From my experience, these programs work well for most learners looking for a structured, mid-depth education - or for people who want a more solid knowledge base to build on. If you already have a lot of knowledge, experience, and hands-on work in the field, these courses might not be what you’re looking for and you could find yourself losing interest halfway through.

What will you study and do in a Coursera Professional program

Each Professional Certificate consists of a course series (usually 4-8 individual courses), and each course is broken down into smaller modules (typically 4-6 modules).

Each course generally has 3 main parts:

  • Theory: includes video lectures and reading materials that summarize the concepts
  • Practice: can be quizzes (fill-in-the-blank, gap fill, etc.) and peer reviews to reinforce what you’ve learned
    • Most programs focus heavily on quizzes
    • UI/UX courses are harder - you’ll need to produce actual deliverables (wireframes, prototypes, etc.)
  • Assignments: Graded Assignments are mandatory, and you need to score above 80% to pass
    • You get 3 attempts total
    • If you fail all 3, you’ll need to wait 24 hours before trying again

Ways to optimize costs and get your Certificate

Option 1: Buy Coursera Plus

This is the most straightforward option - you can purchase individual courses or a monthly subscription directly from Coursera. However, since a Professional Certificate typically takes at least 2-3 months to complete, you’ll want to think carefully about the cost. If you want to save money, you can look for third-party services that offer genuine account upgrades.

Option 2: Apply for Financial Aid

Coursera has a genuinely useful program for when you want to learn but don’t have the funds: Financial Aid. You’ll need to submit a request to Coursera explaining why you need financial assistance. It usually takes about a week for Coursera to review your application, and during that time you can still enroll and study normally. One downside is that if a certificate has 4 courses, you’ll need to apply for Financial Aid 4 separate times - so plan your timeline accordingly.

Option 3: Apply for a Scholarship

This is the main approach I personally used to learn as much as possible: finding scholarships. I’m happy to say that every year there seem to be plenty of scholarship slots available. The scholarships I received came from NIC (National Innovation Center, Vietnam) for Google courses, and more recently from STIC for a broader range of courses. My NIC review post is here, and my STIC post is here - check them out if you’re interested.
